The Paleo diet is one of the most popular movements in recent times and is probably one of the healthiest and sustainable diets/lifestyles you can choose and for good reason.

By eating a Paleolithic diet we are stripping back all the processed junk food which floods our supermarket shelves and focusing on eating whole organic foods which nature intended us to eat.

The Paleo diet is after all focused on resembling what our human hunter-gathering ancestors ate thousands of years ago. There are many different variations of this diet due to the fact we are not 100% sure what people from different regions of the world ate and what was available to them at certain times. For sure it would have been highly fueled by a plant-based diet, and topped up with meat, fish, and insects.

Crickets are a great source of nutrients and are a complete protein meaning they have a full amino acid profile.https://www.crickethop.com/news/cricket-protein-flour-nutritional-values

They also contain high levels of Zinc: Which Improves cellular metabolism, immune function, wound healing, acne symptoms, growth, and development, protein synthesis, DNA synthesis, rebuild cells, improves libido, and reduces symptoms of ED in men!!

Another important mineral for our health is Magnesium: This is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems which regulates biochemical reactions which improves muscle and nerve function, blood glucose, protein synthesis, and controls and reduces blood pressure. 10% RDI per 10g serving.

This makes Crickets a fantastic alternative protein which has been consumed by our ancestors for millennia and today with over 2 billion people in the world eating them regularly.

Studies of aboriginal peoples in Australia have shown that by reverting back to a Paleo diet and stopping the western diet people can reverse chronic health conditions such as high blood pressure, type two diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.

However this diet has had some negative issues regarding gut support.  Angela Genoni from the Edith Cowan University in Australia and colleagues have found that following a paleo diet for more than 1 year is associated with unfavourable changes in gut microbiota composition and increased levels of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), an organic compound involved in the development of cardiovascular disease. This study showed that participants consuming a paleo diet had a decreased intake of resistant starch, which is broken down by the gut microbiota, leading to the production of chemicals that are known to be good for our health. In addition, the higher levels of blood TMAO levels were linked to low intake of whole grains. That’s why the authors conclude higher whole grain consumption could be beneficial for those on a paleo diet.

To combat this issue certain insects contain chitin which is in their exoskeleton and acts as a natural probiotic. Crickets, in particular, are shown to provide a remarkably complex array of proteins and a unique type of fibre that helps balance the microbiota in your intestines. Read more here.
