"What does Cricket Flour Protein taste like and how would I use it?"
What does Cricket Flour Protein taste like I hear you ask? Well from most people's reaction I'd have to say nutty. The Cricket Hop Co. Cricket Flour Protein Powder has a mild nutty and earthy flavour. Some say it tastes slightly like some strains of dried mushrooms or shellfish.
Depending on what they are cooked with, crickets can take on many different flavours. For example, dry roasted whole crickets taste very similar to pork scratchings, minus the saturated fats, and is a great snack to accompany a cold beer! (Perfect for summer snacks!) Thai people cook crickets with sugar, chilli and cinnamon, and the sweet-flavoured crickets are devoured by school kids as snacks.
I prefer to use the powder for convenience when baking such things as sourdough, banana bread and muffins and for making smoothies but I also add crickets to finish my tacos, Poke bowls, bibimbap and granola. Cricket flour also goes extremely well with mushroom dishes and is great for a flexitarian diet. It’s a perfect tool for adding protein to plant-based dishes. It also works extremely well with shellfish and can be added in a seasoning to king prawns, lobsters and scallops.
VERSATILITY:
The Cricket Hop Co. Cricket Protein Flour Powder can be used in basically any dish! Due to its mild nutty flavour it can be added to both sweet and savoury dishes. Cricket flour is great for adding to your favourite smoothies, soups, baked goods, or to season your savoury dishes for an increased protein and nutritional intake. Add a scoop (10g) to your preferred dish and off you go. It is not a general flour replacement so you will need to replace 1/3rd of conventional flour with the protein in your baked goods.
